Noahkai Banks has chosen to represent Germany over the United States men's national team. The 19-year-old defender, born in Hawaii to an American father and German mother, has committed his international future to the country where he has lived since infancy.
German youth national team coach Antonio Di Salvo confirmed the decision. "He has chosen to represent Germany," Di Salvo said.
Dual-nationality decision
Banks moved to Germany when he was just seven weeks old. He developed in the youth system of FC Augsburg, making his Bundesliga debut in January 2025. He has since made 35 appearances for the club, scoring one goal, and is under contract through June 2029.
His past includes significant involvement with US youth teams. Banks represented the United States at the 2023 Under-17 World Cup and also featured for the US Under-19 and Under-20 sides. US coach Mauricio Pochettino called him into a senior training camp in September 2025. Banks attended that gathering but later turned down an invitation to a camp in March of this year.
"I really enjoyed the camp," Banks said of his 2025 experience with the US setup. His choice now requires filing a one-time change of association with FIFA, permanently locking in his status with Germany.
Context for the USMNT
The news arrives as the US team prepares for its next match, a home fixture against Peru on September 26. The squad's recent form has been challenging, with just one win in its last five outings. That run includes a 4-1 defeat to Belgium in July and a 2-1 loss to Germany back in June. Fans can track the team's upcoming schedule on our fixtures page and review the full squad depth on our squad list.
Losing a promising talent like Banks is a setback for the program's depth chart. The defender's Bundesliga experience and youth pedigree made him a candidate for future senior call-ups. His decision shows the ongoing competition for dual-nationality players in the global game. The USMNT will now look to other options in defense as it builds toward future competitions. The immediate focus is squarely on securing a positive result against Peru this week.
