Neil Pierre has received his first senior call-up to the United States men's national team for the upcoming international window. Manager Mauricio Pochettino has selected the towering Philadelphia Union defender as part of a fresh look for the squad.
The 2026-09-26 friendly against Peru at home will be the first chance to see the new group in action. The USMNT is looking to rebound from a difficult run, having lost four of its last five matches, including a 4-1 defeat to Belgium in July. The team's next fixture after Peru is a home friendly against Ghana on October 10.
A rapid rise from Pennsylvania
Pierre's journey to the national team began in Lebanon, Pennsylvania. Of Haitian descent, he grew up in a sports-focused family and initially played basketball before committing fully to soccer at age 11. Inspired by his older brother Nelson, he took his first steps at Super Nova FC before joining the Philadelphia Union academy.
He consistently played against older competition in the Pennsylvania youth system, a path that led to a Homegrown Player contract with the Union. Pierre gained further experience with the club's MLS NEXT Pro reserve side and a loan spell with Denmark's Lyngby Boldklub. That time in Europe was key for his development, particularly in the air and on set-pieces, where he scored four goals in ten matches.
Upon returning to MLS, he made an instant impact. Under interim coach Ryan Richter, Pierre came off the bench to score on his league debut against the New York Red Bulls. He has since added four more goals this season while providing a solid presence in central defense.
Building a new cycle
Pochettino's call-up signals a clear intent to integrate MLS-developed talent as the national team enters a new phase. Pierre's inclusion, alongside Union teammates Cavan Sullivan and Frankie Westfield, highlights the coach's confidence in the domestic youth pipeline. Analysts point to Pierre's rare profile-a physically imposing defender who also contributes goals-as a coveted asset for the international stage.
His rapid ascent has also drawn attention from European clubs, with his jump to the USMNT expected to accelerate that interest. Pochettino is shaping a competitive squad by blending established stars with emerging domestic talents, a process fans can track through the team's squad page.
The immediate focus is on the Peru friendly, a key test ahead of future commitments. The team's recent form shows the need for new solutions as they prepare for the next challenge on September 26.
